Audible.com bait and switch trial basis unethical

November 11th, 2010

I am glad that I canceled my 14 day Free Trial.  I have been sick in bed for a few days and I wanted to learn some information that would be useful to my position as Technical Sales for YourHost.com. One of my pet peeves is to waste time and see others waste time.

Sometimes I buy from Amazon and other well known audio places just because they typically make everything pretty user friendly.  I was linked and referred by www.Audible.com a I knew of a book on Marketing I would like to hear but was wary of how it would load into my phone or just download and play,  but they wanted $7.95 to join, and then I stumbled upon a 14 day trial. The flow of signing up was not clear (my first clue) , so I jumped on a chat with a nice person from Audible and she showed me the link to sign up as they were not showing you anything until you put your Credit Card Info in.

I asked if you put your CC info there would be no charge for the first 14 days and what happened after that. She said it would be $14.95/mo. I said what happened to the $7.95? That is not there, it is $14.95. I also asked if the book was downloaded, can I get it easily to my iPhone and they said sure it will go into Itunes and you can get it on your phone. Wrong.

Ok so being sick I wanted to see what they had to offer and I downloaded a free book on marketing. I listened to half of it the first day and today I listened to part of the 2nd half, and I heard the guy talking about faxes and other things well made me want to check the publishing date to make sure I was getting the freshest information.  Publishing date 1994 …Really?

I saved two screen shots so you could see for yourself that I did not make any of this up.

The bottom line is if your going to offer something for free to entice for a long-term relationship, make it worthwhile that is current and can be used.

In summary, difficult to work with, and deceptive.

There were other reasons I cancelled but this was what irritated me the most.

P.S. I could not get the file onto my phone and so I downloaded the app from ITunes and I logged into Audible.com’s app and saw the file, but the download was disabled…. that did it, so I listened to it on my laptop….grrr

Website Magazine Not Accurate

August 10th, 2010

In their defense, only the September 2010 Issue is not accurate -

We consider ourselves Ecommerce veterans and we typically read Website Magazine cover to cover.

Last night I passed around the Top 50 Ecommerce review (page 16) and was sorely disappointed in how the information was gathered and ranked based on the site traffic and basically no other metrics?

We have reviewed, Installed, and hosted several shopping carts and one of the grandaddy of problematic shopping carts, X-Cart, made by a Russian group is ranked 14? OSCommerce ranked 6, has been a derivative of X-Cart.  X-Cart and similar ones should not even be on the list… but it is… Open source, ok, yeah I get it.

In short and I am certain that the Website Mag guys know that Ecommerce carts should be ranked based on  Security, Reliability, Installation,  SEO, Usability, Features, customers needs, etc.
Note: I think very highly of Website Magazine and it’s writers and I hope they will be more cautious next time.

Pinnacle Cart over ShopSite A Quick Review

July 27th, 2010

Pinnacle over ShopSite?

One Sentence – Dynamic database vs Static Database pages is the KEY answer. Pinnacle is NOT as SEO friendly as ShopSite .

Compare Links to one site for Pinnacle address does not have understandable category and product links -

Pinnacle shopping cart – http://www.obxtradingroup.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=9&pg=1

ShopSite cart – http://www.ezupdirect.com/ezup-instant-shelters/exp2vp.php (all words can be easily crawled)

We just finished writing about ShopSite vs others – http://yourhost.com/netspeak/2010/07/shopsite-stil-holding-its-own-sp2-new-features/

I did some research on the web about Pinnacle Cart and came up with some favorable reviews, but we are always cautious with carts as time and time again we have seen some real troubles in one way or another.

One of the main reasons we have stuck with ShopSite is security and it being SEO friendly. ShopSite does not break and its  support system is great.
We have been working with ShopSite as a partner since 1997.

Maybe someone will comment on it.

ShopSite stil holding its own SP2 New Features

July 24th, 2010

Is Shopsite still the best platform? We can all agree that this answer is  yes. If you have known YourHost.com management and staff for any amount of time, you know that we do not stick our heads in the sand when it comes to shopping carts and what new technology has to offer. ShopSite continues to be a steady and stable ecommerce tool .

Over the past 15 years, others systems have come and gone. Some stick, but have their challenges.

ShopSite is like the Tortoise and the Hare in its offerings and it still stands out.
YouHost.com staff is continuously getting feedback from it’s customers and from our YourHost.com internal design staff as to what we would like to see improved.

We are fully aware that ShopSite could use a short list of items and we are working with ShopSite to improve.

One of the big improvements we have seen in the past updates is templates (request a peak from tech), especially in the new release SP2 that is coming in a few weeks. Learn More

Note, there are 15 demos so if you change the number in this url from 25 down to 10 you will see other templates.
